Estimate of External Debt of the Russian Federation as of December 31, 2019

According to Bank of Russia’s estimate, external debt of the Russian Federation as of December 31, 2019 amounted to $481.5 billion, increasing from the beginning of the year by $26.8 billion or by 5.9%. The most substantial influence on the aggregate’s dynamics was exerted by nonresidents’ acquisition of sovereign securities, which were denominated both in Russian rubles and in foreign currencies. External debt of private sector has not changed significantly: growth of liabilities within the framework of other sectors’ direct investment relationships, was partially offset by reduction of banks’ external debt liabilities.
